The camp program was established in 1972 to address the distinctive needs of people with developmental delays. Summer camps were organized to provide an opportunity for local residents to participate in activities and to create an awareness among the public. Camp Benedictine has been operating on a monthly year-round schedule since 1996.

Camp Benedictine fills a vital need for a breather for the parents of children with challenges. The daily challenges of caring for an individual with developmental delays can be overwhelming. Parents face great difficulties in finding time for themselves, each other and other children in the family.

Campers come from Oklahoma, Texas and other states. Parents and siblings are encouraged to come and be trained in how to be better equipped to deal with their specific family challenges. University students are always welcome as well.

A well-trained staff with master and PhD level supervisors is carefully chosen. There is a doctor and a nurse, and a one-on-one counselor if needed.

This camping model is ideally suited to meet challenges while instilling a sense of accomplishment, pride and independence among participants. Campers are given the opportunity to participate in the following activities:

Horseback riding Swimming
Aerobics Basketball
Volleyball Golfing
Group sports Arts & crafts
Community activities Drama
Dance Music

Transportation is provided during camp. Medical assistance and one-on-one counseling is available. Meals, snacks and accommodations are provided.

The need for activity-oriented and community-based programs has increased considerably following the closing of state facilities. Camp Benedictine is extremely cost effective, thus providing an opportunity for everyone to participate. This program doesn’t want to disqualify anyone based on financial reasons.

The cost of the three day camp is $450. The regular cost to the camper is $150., with the rest being paid through scholarships and employee time donations.

This camp model is replicable in any community. Training is available.
