FUNDRAISER

The idea arose while Virginia Reeves, Marie Skelton and Marcy Reeves were on their way back from Kansas visiting family. “We were driving back, listening to music and it occurred to us that it would be so fun to put on a show” explains Marie, a secretary at the National Institute on Developmental Delays. Between the three of them, the idea kept exploding until they came up with an idea to make the show a fundraiser where all profits would benefit the National Institute on Developmental Delays; a place very dear to their hearts. Thus was born, “ROCKIN’ FOR CHANGE”.

Marie and Marcy began working right away on ideas for the show as well as people they could contact to participate. Marcy explains that, “We wanted it to be people who understood the cause”. Contacting close friends Meagan Lemons, Breana Lupo, Heather Gregory and Amy Prock was the first step in creating what is now known as Adults and Kids Who Care (AKWC).

The girls met twice a week, gaining more and more ideas until one day Heather said “We are going to need more people”. With that in mind, they set out to recruit more people to join them in their efforts. Quickly, the girls were able to gather Virginia Reeves, James Lucas, Brandi McCaul, Kristy Kisor, Tom Kisor, Dipti Chudawala, Jose Joy, Jesse Funk, Isaac Garcia, Laura Garcia and Ramon Garcia. As they all got together and began working on their parts, they continued to see the program blossom.

“Rockin for Change” debuted on March 27th 2004. The emotional performance caught the audience by surprise. There was a mixture of laughter along with tears. “It was so emotional; they did a wonderful job”, states one of the audience members.

AKWC raised $900.00, in which all proceeds were donated to NIDD. “When we first got together, it was going to be a one time event”, states Marie, “But we watched the show develop into an emotional performance and we all knew it wasn’t something we could give up”.

AKWC is currently in the process of planning their next fundraiser to occur in March 2005. Marie says, when asked about the upcoming fundraiser, “Our goal is to raise $8,000 or more for an Aqua Lift for the swimming pool to insure a safer transfer of individuals unable to walk down the ramp. We are looking at many possibilities for the fundraiser and we are all having a wonderful time getting together to brainstorm”.

If you would like to assist the AKWC in their efforts to raise money for the Aqua Lift or give a donation to help their goal, please contact Fr. Paul Zahler at 405-878-5289.
