This approach would benefit not only children with developmental delays but also children with normal development. The developmental techniques developed by Fr. Paul Zahler incorporated in the Early Child Development Center, Shawnee, Oklahoma, have won the approval of parents and professionals alike. Practicality and result orientation are the twin merits of his developmental program. Many participants experienced their first step forward at this program. Fr. Paul’s journeys to both developed and developing countries convinced him of the need to evolve a more effective and complete program . Thus was born the 'Experience Quotient Functional Approach', a developmental program based on activities that contribute to the optimum development of an individual. Fr. Paul has played a key role internationally in facilitating the transfer of the best practices between developed and developing nations. The year-round early child development program has reached out to more than three thousand children and the multi faceted adult program has served more than ten thousand adults and their families. From the very beginning, Fr. Paul has been working in close association with the families in the community. This resulted in an integrated approach that also involved sharing of mutual resources and support. The community supported the programs for individuals with developmental delays - sports, recreational and other facilities. He was thoughtful in creating a social atmosphere where people with challenges could live as a part of the community with dignity. Fr. Paul had a distinguished academic career before he totally dedicated himself to his true calling, working with children with developmental delays. Armed with a master’s degree in Education and a doctoral degree from the University of Oklahoma, he has been teaching Psychology and Child Development at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, for years. Born in St. Michael, Minnesota, he joined the Order of St. Benedict in 1935. He lives at St. Gregory’s Abbey in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
