Studies by Vojta
researchers show that ten percent of the general ‘unselected’
population of infants of less than six months of age will show signs
of abnormal development. Once identified, these infants can be
placed in categories based on the percentage of risk of developing a
handicapping condition. A certain percentage of infants will
overcome this risk on their own and develop naturally. If, however,
an infant does not progress naturally, the risk of developing a
handicapping condition increases. Vojta professionals can intervene
through the use of ‘Vojta Physiotherapy’ to avert this
condition. The physical therapist trains parents to administer this
therapy at home. The procedure takes five to ten minutes and is
usually done three to four times a day. The physical therapist and
pediatrician closely monitor these infants. If the therapy is begun
in the first six months of life, most infants can be brought back on
the track to normal development; in other cases, it helps minimize
the handicapping condition. The condition sets in if not treated
within the first year of life, which makes it increasingly difficult
to trigger normal development.
